Description
The Watts Gallery is a gallery and house built between 1903 and 1904 by C. Hatton Turnor to house the paintings and sculpture of George Frederick Watts. It features roughcast cladding with tile on edge dressings and plain tiled roofs, which are hipped at the right end and flat over the central gallery. The central gallery is enclosed by a half H-shaped portion with gable ends to the south, and L-shaped ranges at each end, connected to the main range by two arched loggias. The building has two storeys at the ends and one storey in the centre. There are corbelled square stacks with tile on edge decoration at the tops on the rear left and rear right of the right-hand wing. The fenestration consists of leaded casements on the right, with one first-floor window at each end, two ground-floor windows on the left, and one on the right. Round arched loggias with tile on edge impost blocks connect to the gables on either side of the centre. The ground floor of the gabled bay features round arched panels with tile on edge keystones linking to roundels above. Above and around the central flat roof are eight small gables containing lunette windows, with two facing east, four facing south, and two facing west. There are doors to the curator's house on the east end behind the loggia and to the gallery on the west end behind an identical loggia. The building is listed mainly for its historical interest.
