Description
Quarry Hill House incorporates part of the walls of Guildford Castle. The castle walls date from the 13th century, while the house was built in the early 20th century. The structure features walls made of chalk and Bargate stone, with a red brick and stone house topped by a plain tiled roof. To the left, set back from the road, are the remains of a tower, with a newer wall attached to the front that extends approximately 10 metres along Quarry Street. There is a gate in the right-hand return wall at the junction with the tower. The house is two storeys high and has a modillioned eaves cornice and a segmental pediment on the front facing Quarry Street. A sandstone surround frames a mullioned 2-light casement window on the first floor, while a 3-light stone-mullioned window below is flanked by pier buttresses under tile coping. An old arched oak door made of three planks, featuring studding and strapwork hinges in an elaborate Celtic style, is located between the buttresses to the left. The remains of the castle walls are believed to be part of the outer defense wall of the castle complex and are designated as a scheduled Ancient Monument, Surrey Monument No. 1.
