Description

Batchelors is a house that dates back to the 16th century, with 17th-century cross wings and later extensions and remodels from the 19th and 20th centuries. The core of the building is timber framed and is clad in red and brown brick at the front, with tile hanging above on the gable ends. It features plain tiled roofs and stands two storeys high with an attic in the gable bay and a wing to the right, while the centre and left sections are one storey with an attic.

The house has a massive H-section stack on the ridge to the right of centre, with additional stacks to the left and rear. The gabled wing to the right has a plinth below, a plat band over the ground floor, and an attic casement window under a pentice drip hood. There is a 16-pane sash window on the first floor to the left, a single-pane sash window on the ground floor to the left, and a blocked window on the ground floor to the right, all under gauged brick heads.

In the central range, the left gable features one 3-light casement window on each floor, with leaded glass on the ground floor. There is also a through-eaves, leaded, 3-light pentice-roof dormer to the right above a three-light ground floor window. The left-hand gable end has one 2-light casement window on each floor, and there is a part-glazed, panelled door to the right, set in the angle with the cross wing, under a pentice-roofed porch.

The rear of the house is irregular, with a large gable to the left and penticed extensions to the right. The right-hand return front, which faces the street, has three pentice-roofed dormers in the roofs, two first-floor sashes to the left, and two windows on the ground floor under gauged heads. The central gabled porch is in the Lovelace style and features a half-glazed door in a chamfered surround.
