Description
The Cottage, known as Ashlea and Church Gate Cottage, is possibly a hall house, dating from the late 15th century. It has been extended over time, with additions made in the late 18th century and the 20th century. The original timber frame, felled in 1468-9 according to dendrochronological dating, is now clad in red and blue brick to the front, with some sections white-washed on the ground floor. The roof is plain tiled and hipped, with a gablet to the left.
The building is two storeys high, featuring an inserted front stack to the left of centre and an end stack to the right. The windows are a mix of casements, with two on the first floor to the left and two through-eaves pentice dormers to the right. There is a gabled break to the left with a casement window on each floor, projecting outwards. The ground floor has three windows. A door is situated to the right side of the gabled break (Ashlea), sheltered by a pantiled pentice hood supported on wooden posts. A half-glazed door is on the centre of Church Gate Cottage, within a "rustic" wood porch with a boarded gable, and another half-glazed door is at the right end, in a large, open, gabled porch.
