Description

The Entrance Lodge and Gates to Sutton Place, located on the north side of London Road in Burpham, date back to around 1530 and were remodeled in the 18th century, with 19th-century gates and alterations. This pair of lodges is constructed from red brick with stone plinths and terracotta dressings, featuring hipped plain-tiled roofs and wrought-iron gates positioned between them.

The two rectangular lodges face the road and are approximately 8 meters apart, connected by quadrant-shaped lengths of railings to the gates. Each lodge is two stories tall, with a stone string course above the ground floor and stone-coped, battlemented parapets. There are stacks located at the rear of each lodge. The windows are leaded casements, with one 2-light window featuring an arched head under a label moulding on the first floor of the end walls that face the street.

On the southeast front of each lodge, there are two narrow, round-headed arches of arcading on the ground floor, with a higher panel situated between them. Each lodge has a planked door at the center, facing each other across the drive. The paired iron gates between the lodges are decorated with diamond panels and are hung on two octagonal brick and terracotta piers that have battlemented tops. The quadrant sections of railings on each side link to the lodges and have plain bars set into a brick plinth, with a wall approximately 1.5 meters high.
