Description
The Evelyn Tomb, located 30 feet north of the north wall of the Church of St. Mary, was built in 1783 and is dedicated to Lieutenant General William Evelyn. It is made of grey stone and has a rectangular shape, resting on a plinth with panelled sides. The south side features an inscription panel that is flanked by recessed pilaster strips. The pilasters have a bud and flower motif in their "capital," which continues onto the east and west faces of the tomb. The top of the tomb is stepped, with fluting at the base and a gadrooned design at the top. There is a cartouche on the west end that flanks an hourglass, and an armorial crest is present in the cartouche on the east end.
