Description

A row of four cottages, dating to circa 1895, likely designed by Sir Ernest George for Mary Watts, wife of the artist G F Watts, and intended for workers at her local pottery. The cottages are built in a vernacular revival style. They are roughcast with a hipped tiled roof, featuring two central brick chimneystacks with round-headed panels and two end chimneystacks built into lean-tos. The cottages are two storeys high with four windows. They have casement windows with leaded lights. The front elevation has a recessed central section with brackets reminiscent of a Wealden house. The two central windows are two-storey canted bays. Square, glazed wooden porches are set into the ground floor. The rear elevation features a first-floor jetty supported by brackets. G F Watts commissioned Ernest George to design their house, Limnerslease, also located in Compton.
