Description

This is a watermill dating from the early 18th century, situated on The Street in Shalford. The mill is timber-framed and has a complex external appearance. The lower section is clad in red and brown brick, while the upper section is tile-hung with a distinctive vertical diamond pattern. Further decorative tilework includes fishscale and club patterns on the gable. The centre bay is weatherboarded and projects, supported on wooden posts. The roof is tiled and half-hipped, with a prominent ridge stack to the right. The windows are diamond-pane, leaded, and are generally arranged as two-light windows on each floor, with one light on the top left-hand side blocked off and converted into a pigeon entrance. The central gable contains two two-light, leaded casements with diagonal bracings below. Irregular casements and fixed windows are found on the ground and first floors.

Inside, a significant amount of the original machinery remains. This includes a waterwheel with a diameter of 14 feet, mounted on a cast iron wheelshaft (partially removed). Other features are a cog pit, the wheelshaft of the pit wheel, a cast iron ‘wallower’ spur wheel, and three pairs of mill wheels situated above; one of these pairs is complete with its bed and runner stones. Large storage bins run along the top of the third floor.
