Description
Hazelhatch is a house built around 1897 by Sir Edwin Lutyens. It features whitewashed brick at the bottom with tile hanging above, all under a plain tiled roof that is half-hipped to the left. The building has two storeys with attics beneath a large hipped roof, which includes a square bay dormer that projects and breaks through the eaves to the left of the center. The proportions are tall, with a notably high first floor.
On the left side, there is a stack, and to the left of the main range, a double end corbelled stack, along with a massive corbelled cross ridge stack on the right. The fenestration is highly irregular, featuring a tall, narrow staircase window on the left and two leaded casements beneath the dormer to the left of the center. There is one leaded casement on the first floor to the right and one window on the ground floor to the left. A mullioned and transomed window is located on the ground floor to the right, sheltered by a penticed hood.
To the left of the center, there is a large gabled, tile-hung shallow brick porch that has a panelled door and a flanking single light window. A flat-roofed, tile-hung and brick range projects to the right.
On the right-hand return front, there is a large gable, with a single-storey square bay featuring rounded corners to the left and a two-storey angle bay at the right end. The rear of the house has a double gable with an angle bay to the left and a square bay on the first floor to the right, which is open underneath and has a flat patio to the right.
Originally, the house was set in a garden designed by Gertrude Jekyll.
