Description

Gosden House School is a house that has been converted into a school, dating from the early 19th century. It features rendered cladding that is whitewashed and incised on the right-hand extension, with hipped slate roofs and deep eaves on the main block.

The main block is two storeys high with a mezzanine, set on a plinth and has a wide plat band above the ground and first floors. There are stacks to the left and right of the centre. The front is arranged in a regular four-bay layout, with square sash windows on the mezzanine and tall, 12-pane glazing bar sash windows on the ground and first floors. To the left of centre, there are double half-glazed doors set in a stilted arch surround, beneath a flat-roofed porch supported by two Doric columns that carry an entablature. The extension is three bays wide, two storeys tall, with a plat band and parapet above the first floor, and a stack at the rear right. It has 12-pane glazing bar sash windows on the first floor, with two 8-pane glazing bar sash windows below flanking a central 15-pane window. The left-hand return front has three bays with outer tripartite sash windows.

At the rear, there is a round bay to the left with deep eaves and tripartite sash windows. A three-bay pedimented wing to the left features giant Doric angle pilasters and an end order to the three bays. There is a single-storey extension that surrounds and extends further from the wing.

Inside, the hall has two columns with egg and dart moulding on the capitals. To the left, there is a fireplace surround with an "oeil de boeuf" over the mantle, along with egg and dart mouldings and garlands.

The building was undergoing restoration at the time of the last survey.
