Description

Bookers Tower in Guildford is a tower built in 1839. It is constructed from Bargate stone blocks with ashlar and brick dressings and has an octagonal plan. The tower features three stages, with a corbel table at the base of the parapet and a stone string course above each stage. The lower stage has brick-edged, stone-coped buttresses that alternate with Gothic arched, brick-dressed panels. Above, there is irregular slit fenestration, and the upper stage has lancet fenestration. The site of Guildown Cemetery is known to be a Saxon burial ground. This tower was built for Charles Booker, who served as Mayor of Guildford three times.
