Description

The King John House is a house dating from the mid-17th century, built on the site of an older house. It was restored in the early 20th century when it was extended to the rear. The exterior features red and brown brick on a rendered plinth, topped with plain tiled roofs. The building has tall proportions, consisting of two storeys and an attic, which is enhanced by two hipped roof leaded casement dormers. A plat band runs over the ground floor, and there are three stacks to the rear left of centre, with the outer stacks set diagonally, and three square stacks with rebated corners to the rear right. The fenestration has been altered, with evidence of blocked windows. The windows include wood framed leaded casements, one of which is lower on the first floor to the left, under cambered heads. There are two four-light mullioned and transomed windows to the right, following a similar pattern on the ground floor.

To the left of centre, there is a projecting gabled two-storey entrance bay with a tile hung gable and a casement window on the first floor. The entrance features a ribbed and studded arched door set in a recessed panel, with rusticated voussoirs and a central keystone above. A raised brick panel supports a lantern above the door.

Inside, the house has a large central hall with a chalk block fireplace that bears the initials "J.B." There is 20th-century panelling, and a 17th-century staircase with turned balusters that extends up to the second floor. Traces of an oven can be found in the rear range.
