Description
Woodcote Grove is a late 17th-century house located on Chalk Lane in Epsom. It features two storeys, a basement, and an attic, constructed of plain brick with red dressings. The facade has a symmetrical arrangement of windows, with one central window slightly projecting under a pediment. A flight of steps with iron rails leads up to a central doorcase supported by fluted Corinthian columns, which has a rusticated surround, a panelled frieze, and a dentilled cornice. The entrance includes glazed double doors and a rectangular leaded fanlight. The eaves cornice is carved and dentilled, and there is a round window in the pediment. The slate roof has four large pedimented sashed dormers, with the inner ones featuring segmental pediments.
In the late 19th century, around 1895, two similar-style wings were added to the north and south, both with flat roofs and parapets. The rear elevation mirrors the front but lacks a central doorcase. The house was built by J Diston, and there is a portrait of Charles II in the hall, inscribed as having been painted by Lely at the command of and as a gift from Charles II to Diston. Originally named Mount Diston, the property includes a mount in the garden.
Inside, the hall is paved with white marble and features a black and white marble mantelpiece. The staircase, which is screened by a Doric colonnade, is made of stone and has a wrought iron scrolled balustrade and a ribbed barrel ceiling. The library has pine panelling and two mid-18th-century carved wood fireplaces with rococo ornament. There are three bedrooms, each with 17th-century bolection moulded panelling, one of which includes an original marble fireplace and an 18th-century hob grate.
