Description
The Hylands is a substantial house, originally dating to the mid-18th century, situated on Dorking Road, Epsom. The front facade was updated in the mid-18th century. It is constructed of red brick with a two-by-three-by-two sash window arrangement, with the central section set back slightly. A central doorway features rusticated pilasters, a triglyph frieze, an open pediment, and an ornamental semi-circular fanlight above a six-panel door. A brick pilaster extends the full height of the building to the left of the door. A band runs around the building, topped by a parapet. Early 18th-century wrought iron gates and railings are present, accompanied by brick walls and piers adorned with stone vases.
The rear of the house incorporates a porch dating to the early 19th century, supported by fluted iron columns with foliate capitals.
Inside, the paved entrance hall extends to the depth of the house and contains a central staircase with two flights of turned balusters, carved brackets, a gallery, and column supports. Several late 17th and 18th-century mantelpieces and grates are also present. A dressing room contains bolection moulded panelling, while the kitchen has various fitments. A back staircase features a solid string and twisted balusters.
The house is part of a group that includes numbers 67, 69, 71, and 75, along with their associated forecourt walls, piers, railings, and gates.
