Description
Hylands House dates to circa 1740. It is a three-storey building constructed of stock brick with red brick dressings. The front facade originally featured five tall, narrow sash windows, with the outer windows each side of the centre being half-width. Later additions include two two-storey canted brick bays, matching the style of the house, replacing two windows each side of the centre, featuring a cornice and blocking course. A central Corinthian doorcase has fluted pilasters and an ornamental panel of foliage between the capitals, a frieze with a shield, and a moulded dentilled cornice. A first-floor window is round-headed, set within a plain band surround of rubbed brick with a stone key and archivolts, stone cill, and supporting brackets. A similarly detailed, flat-arched window is located on the second floor. Horizontal bands delineate the storeys, and angle quoins extend up to a cornice and panelled parapet. A flat-roofed attic, containing three sash windows, is situated on the top floor.
Inside, the original staircase has an open string, carved brackets, and twisted balusters. A west ground floor room boasts a marble chimneypiece and a glazed china cupboard, with panelled walls. An east front room also features a marble chimneypiece. The forecourt has 18th-century iron railings, which are now in poor condition.
Hylands House is situated within a group alongside Nos 67, 69, 71 and 75, comprising forecourt walls, piers, a clairvoyee, and gates.
