Description
Burwood House, now the Convent of Notre Dame School, is a country house dating from the late 18th century, with alterations and additions made in the 19th century. The main block features incised render, while the wing is constructed of yellow stock brick. The building has hipped slate roofs with end stacks.
The rectangular main block is two storeys high and consists of three bays, with glazing bar sash windows on the first floor. To the left, a projecting wing creates a courtyard in front and has a two-bay range that is set back, featuring dentilled eaves and glazing bar sash windows. The left wing has eight bays, with three bays to the right of a pedimented break, and also features glazing bar sash windows under gauged heads on the first floor. In the centre of the pedimented break, there are double glazed doors in an arched opening.
The right-hand return front is two storeys high, displaying glazing bar sash windows with cambered heads on the ground floor. To the left, there is a recessed terrace supported by four Doric columns on pedestals. A relief panel depicting the "Battle of the Lapiths and Centaurs" is located in the centre of the first floor. The garden front has dentilled eaves and battlemented parapets above, with three angle bays to the left and a flat-edged stone conservatory, now used as a cloakroom, to the right of centre, which is supported by four Doric columns with full-height glazed panels between.
