Description
Catts Hall is a house dating from around 1700, with additions made in 1800 and windows updated in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of brick, which is now painted, and features a plinth with a tile-hung rear stair turret. It has a mainly tiled roof with an external brick chimneystack.
The house is two storeys high with attics. The front elevation has four windows with cambered heads on the ground floor. Although these windows are from the late 19th century, they likely replicate the style of the original cross windows. A brick string course, which is interrupted over the second window from the right, indicates the original position of the front door. There is a metal plaque near the plinth that shows the date 1800 and the initials CNT. To the right side, there is an original lean-to that may have served as a dairy, which features a plinth and a string course that continues through. The left-hand side has a later lean-to with a plank door beneath a tiled penticed weatherhood.
The rear elevation showcases a central gabled stair turret that is hung with plain tiles and includes some courses of curved tiles, flanked by a catslide roof with dormers.
Inside, the right-hand front room has an open fireplace with a salt recess and two built-in wooden seats. There is an axial beam with a one-inch chamfer and a triangular stop, along with an original tiled floor. The parlour on the left has a moulded cornice, a chamfered axial beam, and a diagonally-set fireplace. A winder staircase features stick balusters and thin timber framing. The principal bedroom includes a chamfered spine beam with tongue and lozenge detailing, two cupboards with plank doors—one of which has H-hinges—and a small fixed window with a wooden surround, possibly used as a powder closet. Several plank doors remain throughout the house. The roof has staggered purlins.
This building was formerly known as Squirrel's Drey.
