Description
Nos. 22 to 30 on Octagon Road are a row of almshouses built around 1912 by Sir Ernest George. The buildings are constructed from red brick and feature rusticated quoins. They have a plain tiled roof with three panelled stacks located at the left, right, and right end. The structure is single storey and consists of 10 bays. There is an arched entrance with keystones and blocked lower surrounds in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 8th, and 9th bays. Casement windows are present in the 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th, and 10th bays. Whiteley Village was established by William Whiteley of Whiteleys stores to provide for thrifty elderly individuals and was designed on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, utilizing prominent architects of the time.
