Description
The Church of St Mary is a church built in 1880 by G.E. Street. It is constructed from buff covered coursed marble stone with Bath stone dressings and features plain tiled roofs, with slate over the south aisle. The church has a roughly cruciform shape, with a gabled porch on the north side and a vestry on the southeast. The windows in the aisles are 2-light with a cill band, while the clerestory has 3-light windows. The west end has two windows with panel tracery. There are arched plank doors on the north and south wings, featuring C-strap hinges.
Inside, the church has a three-bay nave arcade supported by round piers to the west, a quatrefoil pier at the center of the south arcade, and an octagonal pier at the center of the north arcade. The chancel arch extends to full height. Notable fittings include a stone pulpit, mullion and transomed panels, and a stone dado screen with iron railings above the chancel. The font is a marble bowl with eight concave sides on a columned stem. The reredos was added in 1930. There is also a late brass monument from 1527 to Robert Castleton and his wife located on the east wall of the south transept, which was taken from the old demolished church.
