Description
The Hersham Memorial Cross is located in the north-east corner of Hersham Memorial Garden. Constructed from Hoptonwood stone, it stands 6 meters tall and takes the form of a Latin cross, featuring a cover over the cross-head with angled crenellations. At the intersection of the cross, there is a shield displaying the monogram IHS. The cross is supported by a tapering, octagonal shaft with a moulded foot, which rests on a square plinth. This plinth is set on a three-stepped, octagonal base.
The north-east face of the plinth includes a dedication in relief lettering that reads "IN MEMORY OF THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919/ AND OF THE MEN OF HERSHAM/ WHO FOUGHT THEREIN." The north-west face honors those who lost their lives in the Second World War, with incised lettering stating "1939 – 1945/ TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY/ OF/ THE MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN/ OF HERSHAM/ WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE/ IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR." The names of the First World War casualties are carved on the south-east face of the plinth, while the south-west face features a shield encircled by a wreath, also carved in relief.
The memorial is surrounded by flower beds and enclosed by iron railings.
