Description

Nos. 1 to 11 Heather Walk is a group of almshouses built around 1912 by Sir Ernest George. The buildings are constructed of red brick, featuring brick rusticated quoins and dressings, and have a moulded brick cornice beneath a hipped plain tiled roof. There are tall panelled stacks at the center of the structure. The almshouses are arranged in three blocks around a square, connected by angled arches at the corners. Each block is one storey high and has two windows with casement frames, along with outer entrance arches that have rusticated jambs. Whiteley Village was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores and was designed on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, who collaborated with prominent architects of the time.
