Description
Nos. 1 and 3 South Avenue are a pair of almshouses built around 1912 by Sir Mervyn Macartney. They are constructed of red brick and feature a plinth and a plat band, with a coved cornice beneath a pyramidal plain tiled roof. The building has two storeys and consists of two bays. The first floor has casement windows, and the arches below have keystones; the left arch is blocked and originally had inset casements, while the right arch serves as the entrance. Whiteley Village was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores to provide housing for thrifty elderly individuals and was designed on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, utilizing prominent architects of the time.
