Description

Nos. 4 to 8 on Chestnut Walk are almshouse flats built around 1912 by Walter Cave. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features hipped tiled roofs. It has a symmetrical design with a two-storey, three-bay central block flanked by one-storey wings that project forward to create a courtyard in front. The central block has quoined ends and a plat band above the ground floor. The outer bays have stone-dressed mullion and transom windows, which are angle bay casements that rise through two floors and into the roofline. The centre is divided into three bays by quoined piers and features an arched arcade on the ground floor, with an upper balcony that has glazed outer openings. A staircase is located behind the central arch, and there are recessed planked doors in arched openings at the ends, along with further doors in the quoined wings. A central lantern is mounted on a bracket above the ground floor arch. This building is part of Whiteley Village, which was laid out in an octagonal plan and commissioned by William Whiteley of Whiteley Stores to provide housing for thrifty elderly individuals.
