Description
Nos. 6 to 16 (even) on Heather Walk is a group of almshouses built around 1912 by Sir Ernest George. The buildings are constructed of red brick with sandstone quoins and dressings, featuring hipped plain tiled roofs and tall panelled central stacks. The design consists of three blocks arranged around a square, with arches angled across to connect the blocks at the corners. The almshouses are single-storey and have four windows, which include glazing bar sash windows. The outer entrance arches are made of stone and are adorned with impost blocks and keystones. Whiteley Village was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores to provide for thrifty elderly individuals, and the layout was designed in an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, utilizing prominent architects of the time.
