Description

This is a row of four small houses and cottages, dating from the 17th century, with alterations and extensions in the early 18th century and possible remodelling in the early 19th century. The houses are constructed of coursed squared marlstone with some ashlar dressings, and are roofed with thatch, featuring limestone-ashlar stacks. The houses have one or two-unit plans, with some being two storeys high and one having an attic. No. 11, the most substantial of the buildings, has a two-window front, featuring a three-light 17th-century stone-mullioned window with labels at ground floor and tall wooden cross windows above within early 18th-century walling. All windows have leaded glazing. A small attic window is found in the left gable. The roof has 19th-century flanking stacks and an inset dormer to the rear. A rear wing has casement windows. A main entrance is within the structure of No. 10 and adjacent to its doorway, both incorporating chamfered segmental arches below what appear to be inserted labels. The ruins of Nos. 10 and 9 retain remains of ground-floor windows, and No. 8 has a pair of similar windows with three-light leaded casements in chamfered stone surrounds below labels, likely dating from the early 19th century. Only one first-floor window, a two-light leaded casement, survives above the entrance to No. 10. Gable walls stand to full height, retaining 19th-century stacks with plinths and moulded caps. No. 10 retains some roof timbers and part of its first floor. The interiors have not been inspected.
