Description
Eynsham Hall North Lodge, now a house, was built in 1845 by Sir Charles Barry and has undergone later alterations. The building is constructed from squared and coursed limestone, featuring ashlar quoins and dressings, with a gabled Welsh slate roof and brick lateral and ridge stacks. It is designed in an Italianate style and has an L-plan layout. The two-storey gable end of the left wing includes a storey band and one 2-light window above two one-light windows, all with semi-circular arched heads. The one-storey-and-attic range to the right has two 2-light stone-mullioned windows, with additional mullioned windows and an entry at the rear. The eaves are bracketed.
The lodge is complemented by subsidiary features, including limestone ashlar gatepiers and larger rusticated main-gate piers that have bracketed eaves and ball finials. These flank wrought-iron pedestrian gates and double carriage gates, which may date from around 1900. The gates are adorned with scrolls on the sides and are ramped to low flanking walls, each approximately 20 metres long and finished with moulded ashlar piers. The lodge and gates were constructed at the north entrance to Eynsham Hall during its remodelling by Barry for the 5th Earl of Macclesfield.
