Description
Numbers 5 and 7, formerly the Primary School and Schoolmaster's House, were built between 1853 and 1854 by G E Street, the Oxford Diocesan Architect. The buildings are constructed of rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings, featuring steep Cotswold stone roofs. They exhibit a Gothic style, which is a robust variation of the lancet style, and have an irregular plan with the school arranged in two parallel ranges and the schoolmaster's house forming an L-shape to the east.
The main west front showcases a prominent schoolroom gable with triple paired lancets that have triangular heads and roundels. Below this, there is a lean-to with a gabled entry, a characteristic feature of Street's designs. To the right, a projecting gabled wing includes high-transomed windows and a lean-to with a bracketed hood over the door on the south return. The south front displays three irregular gables, with the leftmost featuring a recessed arch. On the north return, there are two sets of three cusp-headed lancets with transoms positioned below the string level, along with a square corner buttress.
