Description
The railway bridge, built around 1853, was designed by engineer I.K. Brunel. It is constructed from snecked rock-faced red sandstone ashlar, with some rock-faced ironstone ashlar, and features a brick intrados for each arch. The bridge has rock-faced ironstone ashlar retaining walls, with some late 20th-century blue brick patching. It includes a wide elliptical arch with stepped voussoirs, flanked by round pedestrian archways that also have rock-faced voussoirs and keystones. A tooled flat string course and parapet with coping complete the structure. The Wolvercot Junction to Evesham section of the Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway was opened in June 1853 and doubled in August 1854. Although designed by Brunel, the line was standard gauge from the beginning.
