Description
Merryfields House, built in 1927 by Oliver Hill for Sidney Smith, is a house constructed from coursed stone rubble with a gabled stone slate roof and stone end stacks. It features a central-staircase plan with canted side-wings and is designed in the Arts and Crafts style. The house is two storeys high and has a seven-window range. The central porch, which is two storeys and has an attic, includes a chamfered four-centred arched architrave leading to a plank door with strap hinges. Above the door is a flat stone arch over a two-light casement and a lunette window in the attic. The house also has flat stone arches, slightly cambered, over additional two-light casements.
To the right, there are one-storey side wings attached to a ten-metre long wall topped with a ball finial, while to the left is a seven-metre long wall that culminates in a pyramidal-roofed gazebo. The rear elevation mirrors the front and features a central carved panel by Eric Gill. Inside, the house boasts stop-chamfered beams and open fireplaces with stop-chamfered brassumers. It also has heavy plank doors with strap hinges and fine dog-leg stairs with heavy turned balusters and newel-post finials.
