Description

The Chestnuts is an early 18th-century house situated in Witney Wood Green, with later alterations. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with a gabled stone slate roof and moulded stone end stacks. The house follows a 2-unit through-passage plan and is two storeys high with a three-window front. The front door is a 6-panelled door with an early 19th-century fanlight, set within a moulded architrave featuring fluted pilasters and a bracketed open pediment. The windows are mostly 19th-century and 20th-century six-pane sashes with concrete architraves; one window to the left is a 1950s tripartite sash. A moulded stone cornice runs along the top of the building. The rear of the house features a stair turret and a late 18th-century two-storey service wing to the left. Inside, the room on the right is panelled with fluted pilasters, and the roof is supported by boarded collar trusses.
