Description
The stable range, built in the early to mid-19th century, is located 25 metres north of Kencot House and features some later alterations. It is constructed from coursed rubble limestone with dressed quoins and has stone slate roofs. The building is designed in a Gothick style, with a tall central bay that includes a vehicle entry, flanked by lower stable wings. The central bay has a coped gable at the front and is slightly advanced. It features a vehicle entry with dressed stone jambs and a wooden lintel, a 2-light leaded window with wooden Y-tracery, a 4-centred arch, a hoodmould, and a square clock panel with blind tracery and a Tudor hoodmould. Above the clock panel is an arched bellcote.
To the left of the central bay is a 2-bay lofted stable, which has 2-light leaded windows with 4-centred wooden tracery and blind tympana set in semi-circular arched surrounds of dressed stone. There is a central boarded door with a wooden lintel and a small boarded loft door above. This section contains three stable boxes. Attached to the left end is a lower bay with a half-hipped roof and 20th-century garage doors.
To the right of the centre is an altered wing that was formerly open at the front, now featuring later stone and rendered infill. This wing has two boarded doors, a small projection to the right, and a single loft light with a Tudor hood in the right gable.
Attached to the front right of the stable range is a short length of stable-yard wall, which ramps down to a gatepier that has a blocked archway. The wall and pier are likely from the late 19th to early 20th century, made of rubble stone, with the pier topped by a pyramid cap and ball finial. The stable range is included for its group value.
