Description
Castle Cottage is a house dating from the late 17th century, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed from uncoursed limestone rubble with alternating angle quoins, and has a stone slate roof. The house follows a three-unit baffle-entry plan. It has two storeys. A lean-to porch with a 20th-century half-glazed door is situated on the right side, and a ridge stack is directly below the eaves to the left. There are two 19th-century casement windows directly below the eaves to the right of the porch, and one in a cut-away section to the right, also below the eaves. On the ground floor, a three-light mullion window with a dripstone is immediately to the right of the porch, and a rectangular window with a dripmould is set in a slight projection to the right. An iron reversed S-shaped brace is visible between the windows. The rear of the property has a lean-to projection, believed to contain the staircase, with a small casement window on the first floor towards the centre, and two casement windows directly below the eaves to the left and one to the right. Ground floor rear windows consist of three-light mullion windows with dripstones on either side of the projection. The interior was not inspected during a resurvey in May 1987, but is likely to be of interest. A 20th-century single-storey flat-roofed projection to the rear is not considered to be of architectural significance.
