Description
Dunford House is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the mid to late 17th century, with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of uncoursed limestone rubble, with a stone slate roof. The building follows a 4-unit baffle-entry plan, with gabled ranges projecting at right angles to the rear. It has two storeys and a gable-lit attic. The front has a four-window arrangement; two segmental-headed three-light casements are positioned on each side of the central entrance, with matching windows above on the first floor, aligned beneath the eaves. A 20th-century ledged door is set within an earlier chamfered stone surround, sheltered by a 20th-century flat-roofed porch with a wrought-iron trellis. Integral end stacks and a central ridge stack are present, all featuring moulded dripstones and capping. The rear elevation has a plank door to the right of centre and a small two-light mullion window centrally. A range projecting to the right, in two sections, is of differing construction phases and has a mixture of 19th-century and 20th-century casements on the left side. A projection to the left, reputedly dating from around 1930, incorporates a three-light mullion window on the right side. Inside, the ground floor rooms contain chamfered ceiling beams and stone inglenook fireplaces. The staircase has a mix of barleysugar and turned balusters, appearing to be 19th-century, and reused panelling to the dado incorporates blind Gothic tracery patterns and other decorative designs.
