Description
Bridgewater House, formerly known as Trevor House, is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It underwent significant remodelling in the mid-18th century, originally being a 17th-century structure, with later additions and alterations. The exterior features roughly coursed limestone rubble alternating with regularly coursed blocks, creating a banded stonework effect, and is topped with stone slate roofs that have coped verges, moulded to the main range. The building is two storeys high with a gable-lit attic.
The front of the house has 19th-century three-light casement windows, with earlier dripmoulds on either side of the central entrance, which is sheltered by a flat bracketed hood. The entrance features a four-panel door with panelled reveals, where the bottom panels and reveals are fluted. There are integral end stacks with paired and rebated shafts, complete with dripstones and capping. To the left, there is a later addition that includes a 19th-century segmental-headed three-light casement on the ground floor and a 20th-century gabled false dormer directly above. The integral end stack on this side was rebuilt in the 20th century.
The back wall of the main range has two-light mullion windows with dripstones on both floors and an infilled doorway on the far left. There are 19th-century gabled ranges projecting to the left and right; the former has had its roof raised in the mid-20th century, while the latter was originally stables with a granary above, accessible by external steps.
Inside, there is a dog-leg staircase in the central hall featuring stick balusters, a carved open string, and a wreathed handrail that rises to the attic. The right ground-floor room contains a 18th-century carved wooden fireplace surround that has been brought in from elsewhere, concealing an inglenook, and features a chamfered spine beam. The left room has a stone fireplace with a concave moulded surround and a later wooden lintel.
