Description

Croftdown is a house dating from the late 17th century, with later alterations. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble and features a gabled stone slate roof, along with stone end and internal stacks. The building has an L-plan that was extended in the 19th century to create a double-depth plan. It stands two storeys high with an attic and has a four-window range.

The main entrance is a mid-18th century six-panelled door set within a moulded wood architrave, topped with a bracketed open pediment. On the ground floor, there are late 19th century tripartite sash windows beneath timber lintels. The first floor features late 17th century two-light casements with leaded lights, which are adorned with chamfered timber lintels and keyed round-arched heads. The roof has three gabled dormers, each with two-light leaded casements.

At the rear, there is a three-storey wing to the left, which has early 19th century six-pane sashes and a shallow-pitched Welsh slate roof. To the right, a two-storey bay was rebuilt around 1840 in chequer brick. The rear porch includes a reset early 16th century two-light moulded stone-mullioned round-arched window.

Inside, there is a mid-18th century china closet to the left and an early 18th century dog-leg staircase with a landing, which was reset in the late 19th century and features turned balusters on a closed string. A room to the right contains a reset decorative carved overmantle dated 1593, flanked by fluted pilasters. The interior also showcases cased beams, bolection-moulded panelled doors, and a collar-truss roof with butt purlins.
