Description

Middle Farmhouse is a 17th and early 18th century farmhouse, now a house, located in Spelsbury Taston. It has been extended and altered in the 20th century. The house is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with wooden lintels, featuring Stonesfield-slate and Welsh-slate roofs and rubble stacks. It has an L-shaped plan, with a later extension. The front features a central doorway within a 20th-century porch. To the right are two 2-light casements on each floor, and to the left, two casements at ground floor and one above, some with 17th-century stop-chamfered lintels. The steep-pitched roof has two gabled dormers. A single-storey 20th-century range extends to the right. A 17th-century rear wing returns from the left, with a later range adjoining it. Attached to the former wing is a two-storey granary range, accessed by external stone steps, and now incorporated into the house. Inside, there are three open fireplaces, two with cambered stop-chamfered bressumers, chamfered cross beams, and winder attic stairs. Originally, the house had a through-passage plan, with the main fireplace adjoining the passage.
