Description
The Churchyard Gateway, located approximately 20 meters east of The Vicarage, is a gateway with a gate dating from the early to mid-17th century, with a mid-19th century gate. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a cast-iron gate. The gateway is made from re-used piers that display vermiculated banding on the front and break forward to include shell-headed recesses beneath oval niches. The head of the gateway is adorned with inverted festoons of fruit on either side of a double-stepped keyblock, and a moulded coping runs over the piers. The rear of the doorway has an angle roll. This gateway was likely originally part of a much wider entrance in the grounds of Great Tew House.
