Description

High Lodge is a hunting lodge, now a house, built around 1768 by Capability Brown. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble and features hipped Welsh slate roofs. The building has a three-unit plan and is designed in the Gothick style. The front facade has a three-window range, with a central three-storey tower flanked by two-storey bays. In the center, there is a three-storey canted bay window, which includes two-light pointed-arched windows with applied wood frames above a pointed-arched doorway that has a studded door. The flanking bays also have similar windows. The building features raised storey and parapet bands, along with a crenellated parapet. The sides and rear of the tower have similar windows that include sashes with octagonal panes. There are porches with crenellated parapets at the rear of the flanking bays. Behind the tower, there is a pointed-arched doorway with a studded door, and crenellated walls that enclose a yard measuring approximately 10 by 10 metres. The interior has not been inspected. The lodge stands on the site of a medieval lodge. Blenheim Park, where the lodge is located, is included in the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission Register of Parks and Gardens at Grade I.
