Description

This is a stone slab fence located approximately 12 metres to the northwest of Number 1 The Gassons in Filkins. It is likely from the early 19th century and constructed from limestone slabs that are squared and placed on edge, standing about one metre high. These large slabs, referred to as planks, were quarried locally and used in various applications such as fences, stiles, door hoods, and floors, making them a distinctive feature of the village. Similar slab fences were documented by Robert Plot in his "Natural History of Oxfordshire" published in 1677.
