Description
The Methodist Chapel and adjoining school, built in 1823 for the chapel and 1844 for the school, are constructed from coursed squared rubble with ashlar dressings and feature a slate roof. The chapel has a central double door set in a round arch, flanked by round-headed sash windows with glazing bars that intersect at their heads. Three similar windows on the first floor illuminate the gallery at the south end, all featuring plain stone architraves and keyblocks. The gable parapet is topped with stone coping and a ball finial. The gable-fronted school room has two sets of three-light stone mullioned and transomed windows on both the ground and first floors. A Diocletian window is present in the gable, along with mock round-headed windows with intersecting glazing bars at the rear. This building serves as a Wesleyan Sunday School. Inside, the lobby screen beneath the chapel gallery features raised and fielded panels. The gallery, which contains original tiered pews, is supported by two wooden columns and includes stairs with square-section balusters. The dado is match-boarded, and original ceiling ventilators are present. A door from the gallery leads to the first-floor school room, which has a match-boarded roof and tie-beam trusses supported by wooden struts and iron ties.
