Description
Two cottages, dating from the mid-19th century, located on Butchers Hill in Great Tew. They are constructed of coursed squared marlstone with limestone ashlar dressings, featuring a Westmorland-slate roof and marlstone-ashlar stacks with limestone shafts. The design is inspired by 17th-century architecture.
The cottages comprise a central section flanked by crosswings. The central section has a single storey plus an attic. It features two pointed-segmental-arched, chamfered doorways, positioned on either side, accompanied by two-light windows. These elements are situated beneath a deep roof overhang supported by large wooden brackets. A stone-gabled dormer window, rising from the roof, has moulded corbelling almost concealed by the overhang. The gable walls of the crosswings include gable slits at the first floor, positioned above two-light stone mullioned windows with labels. Ground floor windows consist of a three-light mullioned window on either side, and a four-light canted bay window with a cornice and stone roof. All windows have honeycomb lattice glazing. The roofs have gable parapets with projecting kneelers. The front gable of the right wing has a four-gabled apex stone. Chimneys are characterised by octagonal shafts and moulded caps. Interior features include slate stairs and concrete first floors.
