Description
57 and 58 The Lane is a house that has been converted into two cottages, dating from the 17th century. It is built from coursed squared marlstone with ashlar dressings and features a thatched roof with limestone-ashlar gable stacks. The building has a three-unit plan and stands two storeys plus an attic high.
The front has a symmetrical arrangement of a two-window range, with a prominent three-light stone-mullioned window at ground level, which is linked to a continuous drip mould. To the left, there is a lower bay that is set back, featuring a two-light mullioned window above a small single light, and it also includes a stone-roofed bread-oven projection in the angle. All windows are fitted with lattice glazing, and the gables are topped with parapets.
On either side of the higher section, there are 19th-century stacks with moulded caps. The rear of the main range has a projecting gabled stair tower and a chamfered stone doorway. There is a cellar below the right bay that has a mullioned window at the rear. The right gable wall contains the entrance to No.57. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is likely to be of interest and the building is considered a fine example that has probably seen little alteration.
