Description

Back House Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble and features stone slates on the front roof pitch, with artificial slates on the rear pitch. The building has flanking ashlar chimneys that have moulded bases, neckings, and cornices. It stands at two storeys and an attic, with three bays. The windows are 19th-century barred wooden casements with small panes, primarily in two-light configurations, although there are three-light windows on the ground floor right and the first floor centre. There are two windows on the ground floor centre, with the right possibly being a blocked doorway. A gabled roof dormer contains a similar two-light casement. A 20th-century door is located between the left bays, topped by a 20th-century lean-to hood made of stone slates supported by wooden brackets. All openings are fitted with wooden lintels that have beaded lower edges. The rear of the farmhouse has similar windows. Attached to the left end is a projecting cross wing that once served as a cottage and outbuildings, now incorporated into the house, which is one storey and an attic. A range of outbuildings attached at the north end of the wing is not of special architectural interest. Inside, there is a turned baluster staircase, which may not be in its original position.
