Description

The Boucher memorial and the Pope memorial are a pair of chest tombs located approximately 1 metre north of the northeast corner of the chancel chapel and the north aisle of the Church of St. Stephen in Clanfield. The Boucher memorial dates from around 1756 and is made of limestone. It has a rectangular shape with a moulded plinth, capping, and a stepped moulded top. The south side features a plain moulded inscription panel, which was illegible at the time of the last survey in July 1987, along with corner pilasters. The north side has an illegible inscription panel surrounded by carved floral motifs and the heads of two winged cherubs at the top, with linked oval-shaped decoration and rosettes at the joins to the pilasters. The inscription panels on the ends commemorate John, the son of Thomas Boucher, who died in 1756.

The Pope memorial, dating from around 1801, is also made of limestone and has a rectangular shape with a moulded plinth, capping, and a stepped chamfered top. It features slightly recessed oval inscription panels with floral emblems in the spandrels and fluted corner pilasters. The south side is blank, while the north side commemorates Ann Pope, who died in 1801, and was the daughter of Thomas and Susan Pope and the wife of John Clark.
