Description
The Church of St Joseph is a Roman Catholic church and church hall located in Carterton. Originally a barn, it dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century and was altered around 1930. The building is constructed from coursed rubble limestone and features stone slate roofs.
The main west range consists of five bays, with a central hipped projection that likely served as a former cart entry, now fitted with a tall 20th-century metal casement window at the front. The left bays include a row of nesting boxes for pigeons, positioned just below the eaves, along with two 20th-century two-light metal casements. There is a small lean-to structure at the angle of the projecting bay. The north gable end of this range features a 20th-century circular window and double doors framed by a moulded stone architrave.
The north range, also comprising five bays, has blocked vent slits and central opposing cart entries, which are partly blocked and partly fitted with large 20th-century wooden mullion and transom windows. The north entry includes 20th-century double board doors. At the rear, there is a later rubble stone extension with a lean-to roof, as well as a 20th-century concrete extension with a flat roof. The barn is situated on the east side of the former yard of Rock Farm, which was established after the Enclosure Act of 1770; the farmhouse is now known as No. 45 (Manor Guest House) on Lawton Avenue.
