Description

Downs Hollow is an entrance lodge built around 1830, likely designed by S.S. Repton for James Houghton Langston. The building is constructed from roughly coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and features stone slate roofs with moulded coped verges. It has a double-depth plan with two gables at the front, showcasing a Tudor Gothic style and standing two storeys tall.

The front facade includes two recessed chamfered 2-light mullion windows that are connected by a continuous hoodmould. This hoodmould incorporates a recessed blank armorial shield in the center on the first floor, with cross-windows featuring dripstones on the left and right sides of the ground floor. A central gabled ashlar porch, adorned with a corbel table, contains a half-glazed door set within an outer shouldered arch. To the right of the porch, there is a small ogee-arched gable that slightly projects.

The building has valley stacks on both the left and right sides, each with three detached diagonal shafts capped with moulding. The two-bay returns feature a recess for a downpipe in the center and have 2-light mullions linked by continuous hoodmoulds that extend from the front to the first floor. The ground floor includes segmental-headed mullioned and transomed bay windows with three lights. All windows and the door are fitted with leaded latticed lights.

Downs Hollow served as the former lodge to The Dower House, which was built for Langston by Repton around 1825. A late 20th-century extension to the rear is not considered to have special architectural interest.
