Description
Gatepiers and gates located approximately 80 meters southeast of Great Tew House date from around 1700 and were likely commissioned by Francis Keck. The gatepiers are made of limestone ashlar and feature wrought-iron gates. Each large square pier has a moulded plinth and cornice, with sides adorned with richly moulded fielded panels. Atop each pier sits a fine garlanded stone urn with a gadrooned cover. The contemporary wrought-iron screen includes two standards that support a pair of gates with scrollwork panels. A scrollwork lock rail extends across the side panels, and the standards are topped with cornices and finials. An elaborate overthrow features repousse work and a central shield of arms. These structures were likely moved when the original Jacobean mansion was replaced by the current house.
