Description

The gazebo with attached walls surrounding the garden to the southwest of Broughton Hall dates from around 1800 and is attributed to Richard Pace of Lechlade. The gazebo is constructed of coursed rubble limestone with ashlar dressings and has a roughcast upper storey. Its roof is concealed by a parapet, and it is a small square building with two storeys. The ground floor features raised ashlar quoins, a moulded string course above, and a two-light stone mullion window in a raised surround on the south side. There is a board door on the north side.

The main upper storey has chamfered quoins, a moulded cornice, and a parapet. The north and south sides of this storey have three-pane sashes set in moulded architrave surrounds, while the east side has double half-glazed doors with a large rectangular fanlight and a similar surround. These doors are accessed by an external flight of 14 moulded stone steps on a coursed stone base, with a simple wrought iron handrail featuring scrolled panels at the landing.

The garden walls are made of squared and coursed limestone, standing approximately 2 metres high, with shallow monopitch stone coping. Each of the south and west walls of the garden has a gateway featuring a segmental ashlar arch with a keyblock. The west wall continues in rubble stone to the north and south along the side of the walk, with the south wall also having a similar gateway.
