Description

A row of four cottages and small houses dating from the 17th century, with alterations and extensions made in the early 19th century. The construction is of coursed squared marlstone with ashlar dressings, and the roof is thatched with limestone-ashlar stacks. The buildings have one- and two-unit plans, and are one storey high with an attic. The middle bays, comprising a six-unit range, are likely original to the 17th century and feature two-light stone mullioned windows with labels at ground floor. The bays to the right were added in the early 19th century and have windows with chamfered stone surrounds, labels, and inserted 20th-century stone mullions. The remaining ground-floor windows have been renewed as two-light stone mullioned windows. The five first-floor windows have 20th-century chamfered stone surrounds. Three entrances on the front have chamfered basket-arched surrounds and labels with lozenge stops, likely dating to the early 19th century, though partly renewed. An entrance is also located in the left return. The roof has three 20th-century ridge stacks and extends over an outshut against the right gable wall. The interiors have largely been rebuilt, retaining some original fireplaces.
