Description
Broad Close is a substantial house dating from the early 18th century, with later alterations in the late 18th century and the 20th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar and coursed limestone rubble, with wooden lintels and a Stonesfield-slate roof, featuring ashlar stacks. The building follows a 2-unit through-passage plan, originally extended to a 0 plan. The symmetrical 3-window ashlar front, dating from approximately 1790, features rusticated quoins, a moulded stone cornice, and 12-pane sashes at the first floor. Ground-floor windows are early 20th-century bay windows flanking a central doorway with a plain architrave and double-stepped keyblock. The roof has gable parapets with stacks having plinths and moulded caps. A lower, earlier range returns to the right, featuring a 3-window arrangement with a central doorway, 3-light leaded casements in bays 2 and 3, and a 12-pane sash above a 4-light casement in bay one. A further leaded casement is found in the gable wall of the taller range. A short wing returning from the right end of the lower range, formerly a stable, is characterised by external stone steps. Internally, the later range contains a central staircase with a wreathed handrail and stick balusters.
